The Steel & Metals Dashboard in Google Sheets turns a flat order log into a six-page mill reporting pack: 4 analysis pages, 16 slicers, 14 charts, 16 KPI cards and a single-cell order lookup, all driven by native Google Sheets pivot tables and slicers rather than helper formulas. The demo build ships with 380 sample orders across 5 mills, 6 product grades and 4 customer segments, and every pivot, slicer and formula is already sized for 1,000 rows. Delete the demo rows, paste your own order log under the same headers, and the whole workbook redraws. Instant download, lifetime access, free updates, and a PDF that carries the Make a copy link so the sheet lands in your own Google Drive.

Key Features of the Steel & Metals Dashboard in Google Sheets

  • Pivot + slicer architecture. Every chart reads a pivot table parked to the right of its page. No SUMPRODUCT or QUERY chains behind the visuals, so the file stays quick as the order log grows.
  • 16 page-synced slicers. Four per analysis page – Mill, Product Grade, Month, Order Status, Customer Segment and Delivery, depending on the page – and one click refilters every pivot, chart and Top 5 panel on that page.
  • 16 KPI cards. Total Revenue, Tonnes Produced, Tonnes Shipped, Avg Yield, Avg Scrap Rate, Avg Energy kWh/t, Total Orders, Delivered, Open Orders, On-Time Delivery, Avg Price / Tonne, Avg Cost / Tonne and Avg Margin / Tonne among them.
  • A sidebar on every page. Snapshot strip, 12-month revenue trend, a Top 5 league table, a share bar and an At a Glance list – roughly 30 secondary figures without leaving the page.
  • Order-level search page. Pick an Order ID and read all 17 fields for that order, including yield, scrap rate, energy per tonne, cost per tonne and price per tonne.
  • Auto-expand to row 1001. Pivots, slicers and formulas already cover 1,000 data rows, so new orders pasted anywhere in that range are picked up with no range editing.
  • Three-value recolour. The whole workbook is themed from one contrast pair – ink #0E2A38 against accent #00B39F – plus amber #F2A03D for second chart series.
  • Built-in Instructions page. A 10-step user guide that documents the pivot layout, the slicer behaviour and exactly which figures are slicer-aware.

What’s Inside the Steel & Metals Dashboard in Google Sheets

Overview – group-wide product mix and mill efficiency

Four slicers (Month, Mill, Product Grade, Order Status) sit above a KPI strip reading Total Revenue $323,344,209, Tonnes Produced 383,424, Tonnes Shipped 257,120 and Avg Yield 91.8% on the demo data. Below sit Tonnes Produced by Product Grade as a treemap and Cost per Tonne vs Yield (Mill x Grade) as a scatter, then Monthly Tonnes Shipped and Order Status Mix by Month. The sidebar carries a Performance Snapshot, a 12-month revenue trend, Top 5 Mills by Revenue and an order status split.

Production – tonnage, yield, scrap and energy intensity

KPI cards for Tonnes Produced, Avg Yield, Avg Scrap Rate and Avg Energy kWh/t sit over Tonnes Produced by Mill, Average Yield by Month, Output Share by Grade, Tonnes Produced vs Shipped by Month and Average Energy per Tonne by Mill. The sidebar adds a shipped-to-produced ratio, average tonnes per order, Top 5 Grades by Tonnage and each mill’s share of output.

Orders – order book, customer segment and delivery performance

Total Orders, Delivered, Open Orders and On-Time Delivery head a page built around Orders by Status, Orders by Customer, Tonnes Shipped by Segment, Monthly Order Volume, Grade Mix by Segment and Orders by Delivery Outcome. The sidebar shows average order value, late deliveries, tonnage awaiting shipment and Top 5 Customers by Revenue.

Who This Template Is For – and Who It’s Not For

A good fit for: steel and metals mill operations managers who want tonnage, yield and scrap on one page; commercial and sales teams reviewing order book, delivery performance and customer mix; finance teams tracking price, cost and margin per tonne; multi-site groups comparing mills on output and energy intensity; and service centres or stockists reporting to a parent company in a shared browser file.

Not the right tool if you need:

  • Workplace or plant safety management – there is no incident, LTIFR, permit-to-work or hazard reporting here.
  • Emissions or environmental compliance reporting – the energy kWh/t figure is an intensity input you supply, not a carbon or regulatory return.
  • Material grading or metallurgical certification – Product Grade here is a product family label such as Hot Rolled Coil or Rebar. This does not produce, validate or replace mill test certificates or ASTM / EN conformance records.
  • Quality-system certification – it is not an ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 management system and does not evidence conformity to either.
  • Commodity price forecasting or trading – it reports the prices in your own order log. It gives no market forecast, hedging guidance or trading advice.
  • Live MES, ERP or sensor feeds, or per-heat process control – this is periodic reporting from a data export.

How to Use the Steel & Metals Dashboard in Google Sheets

  1. Buy, download the PDF and click the Make a copy link inside it. The dashboard lands in your own Google Drive.
  2. Open the Instructions page first – the 10 steps explain the pivot layout before you change anything.
  3. Go to the Data sheet, delete the demo rows and paste your own order log. Keep the column headers exactly as they are so pivots, slicers and charts keep resolving.
  4. Stay within row 1001 for the auto-expand ranges, or extend the pivot ranges if your log is longer.
  5. Click any slicer in a page’s FILTERS strip to refilter that page. Open a slicer and choose Select all to clear it.
  6. Use the Search page to pull one order’s full record when someone asks about a specific job.
  7. Share the file with your team by link, or use File then Download to export a page as PDF for a review pack.

Real-World Use Cases

Priya, operations manager at a five-mill rebar and coil group. Every Monday she filters the Production page to last week and compares Tonnes Produced by Mill against Average Energy per Tonne by Mill, so the mill running hottest per tonne gets asked about it in the same meeting.

Daniel, commercial lead at a flat-products service centre. He works the Orders page: Orders by Delivery Outcome tells him how much of the book was late, and Top 5 Customers by Revenue tells him which accounts that lateness touched.

Aisha, finance controller for a metals group. She uses the Financials page each month-end, slicing Revenue vs Average Price per Tonne by Grade to see whether a margin move came from price, from cost or from a change in the grade mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this certify material grades or produce mill test certificates?

No. Product Grade in this dashboard is a product family label – Hot Rolled Coil, Cold Rolled Coil, Rebar, Structural Beam, Stainless Plate, Aluminium Sheet. The template does not issue, validate or substitute for mill test certificates, ASTM or EN conformance records, metallurgical certification, ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 quality certification, emissions or environmental compliance reporting, or workplace safety management. It is a reporting layer over data you already hold, and it gives no commodity price forecasts or trading advice.

Is the sample data real?

No. All 380 orders, 5 mills, 12 customers and every figure shown in the screenshots are demo data, generated to show the layout. Replace them with your own records.

Do I need Excel or Power BI?

No. It runs entirely in Google Sheets in a browser. If you prefer another platform, the same topic exists as the Steel & Metals Dashboard in Excel and the Steel & Metals Dashboard in Power BI.

Why do the KPI cards not change when I click a slicer?

By design. The KPI cards and the At a Glance lists use SUMIFS, COUNTIFS and AVERAGEIF against the whole Data sheet, so they always show the unfiltered total as a stable reference. The charts, pivots and Top 5 panels are the slicer-aware parts.

Why does the treemap ignore my grade filter?

Treemap charts are not slicer-aware in Google Sheets, so the Overview treemap always shows the full portfolio. The Instructions page says so, and the other Overview charts respond to the grade slicer normally.

Can I add mills, grades or customers?

Yes. They are just values in the Data sheet columns. Add rows with new mill or grade names and the pivots and slicers pick them up on refresh.

Can I change the colours?

Yes. The theme is one contrast pair plus an accent – ink #0E2A38, accent #00B39F, amber #F2A03D. Edit those three values to recolour the whole workbook.
